Division One leader's Surrey finished day one of their match against title rivals Nottinghamshire firmly on top.


In the wake of choosing to field at Trent Bridge, Morne Morkel took 4-60 as Notts were knocked down some pins out for 210 - with the last man Harry Gurney top-scoring with 29. 

Check Stoneman hit a season-high score of 86 in Surrey's answer, with Rory Burns getting to stumps unbeaten on 97. 

The guests shut on 223-1, giving them a lead of 13 runs and an opportunity to heap on more weight with the bat. 

Jade Dernbach hit with the second wad of the day to evacuate Nott's commander Steven Mullaney for a duck as he, Sam Curran and Rikki Clarke all finished with two wickets each. 

Stoneman hit 17 fours in his thump however passed up a major opportunity for a first County Championship century of the season, while Burns will intend to change over his score into a third Division One ton of the battle when he continues toward the beginning of the day.
